Some Recognition for Kin Types!
May 16, 2018 by Luanne
Those of you who have been reading The Family Kalamazoo for a time know that I published a chapbook this past year based on my research findings, my imagination, and some historical knowledge. Kin Types is a collection of lyric poems, prose poems, and flash nonfiction.
On Monday I woke up to discover that Kin Types was a finalist for the prestigious Eric Hoffer Award. It’s in stellar company.. This recognition validates the work I did on the book and on this blog. Best of all, the book gets a gold foil sticker for the cover ;).

It will kind of look like this when the sticker is put on the book (only not such a large sticker).

If you click through the link to the Amazon page, the book can be ordered for a real deal right now; check it out. To order through Barnes & Noble, try this link.

CONGRATULATIONS you. No surprise though. Your research is so thorough, and sharing it with the community is valuable for those needing inspiration. I don’t often communicate but you and your husband are in our thoughts and prayers. THANK YOU.

Thank you so so much. I think of you so often and wish I could come visit some day!
Hurrah! Congratulations! What wonderful news to wake up to this morning.
Congratulations.
Thank you so much!
Congratulations Luanne! That is fantastic. Recognition where recognition is do.
Thank you so much, Sharon. It is pretty exciting. I never dreamed it would do so well! There aren’t even very many competitions a chapbook can be entered in, so this was so amazing. Great company, too!
Congratulations!!! How exciting! I’ve always wanted to include all my info and stories into a better book form other than the yearly Blog2print I’ve used in the past. Do tell how you made all this come to be – did you have s publisher or self print somewhere? I wish you well – I bet your family is very excited to buy a copy!
Jeanne, thank you so much. I am so excited. It’s such stellar company that Kin Types is in! The book is a literary creation of poetry and flash nonfiction, so I sent it to small press publishers that publish literary books and chapbooks. Because it was a hybrid genre of poetry and prose, rather than one or the other solely, making it harder to market, I was so grateful that Finishing Line Press took it. They even did the cover for me (with a photo of my great-great-grandmother). So while I’m particularly thrilled when family reads it, it’s more of a general market made up of people who read poetry and people interested in family history. The Eric Hoffer Award is for books published by small presses, academic presses, and independently published, although I noticed the top prize was published by W.W. Norton. (but maybe such a big publishing company qualifies because it’s owned by its employes, not sure). I think genealogy as a topic in literature is becoming more and more popular–good for all of us, right?!
Congratulations!
Thank you so much!!!
That’s fabulous, Luanne!! Congratulations!
Did the publisher submit it for the award or did you enter it yourself? Just asking to know how that sort of thing is done in the publishing world.
Eilene, thank you! What a great question. I submitted the book myself because although sometimes books are submitted by publishers, there are two issues. One is that this is a chapbook and generally considered not eligible for a lot of competitions. The other is that we are moving more and more toward a time of self-promotion with books. It’s changed so much in the past few years even. When my book was being worked on the publisher sent me a very long handout of how to promote my book, including making up elaborate press releases, etc. It was phenomenal that they did that, especially for a small publisher.
Congratulations my friend…well deserved.
Ah, thanks so much, Ann Marie!
Another post I missed! But I did see on Facebook that you received this wonderful and well-deserved honor! I am so delighted for you—you know how much I loved this book.
Thanks so much, Amy! I was almost shocked to read the email from them on Monday!
