I’d savored KIN TYPES before but had only reviewed history/nonfiction and historical nonfiction on my website before (usually books on Wednesdays), but decided it was time to “branch out” since I’d so enjoyed this awesome little book.
Really nice — and well-earned — review!
Thank you so much, Barb!
Congratulations on the wonderful review! I also watched the trailer for Kin Types, very intriguing! If you don’t mind a writing process question, how closely do you adhere to the facts of the lives you wrote about in the book?
Ah, thank you. My daughter made the trailer :). I don’t write a poem or flash until I really feel part of what happened in the life of that person or persons. Then I use the results of my family history research (and family stories) and add to it my historical knowledge and research and fill in any blanks with imagination. For the most part, what is in Kin Types holds the same kind of fact-based authority as a biography, I would say, but the presentation is much more lyrical, which I hope adds emotional power to the stories of these people. A couple of times I had to reach a little farther into the imagination because the gaps were too large.
My compliments to your daughter–and wasn’t that a nice thing for her to do for her mom! Thanks for taking the time to answer my question. I’m in the “inspired by” camp, and it is definitely fiction. The creative nonfiction I do for family history is within my own memory.
The enjoyed reading the review of Kin Types. The book sounds wonderful.
