- Cover photo shows flooding at the Water Works Bridge in Kalamazoo, March 26, 1904. That spring, the water got 6″ higher than the photo shows.

Luanne, do you have any ideas about what to do with the countless old photographs I have from my family?? I have no children and no younger relatives that appear to have any interest in our genealogy. In this last move I was amazed at the boxes and albums I have that I just can’t let go, and I would like to donate somewhere but don’t know where…:(
Do not do anything where the photos are separated from the names! Are they very old photos or mid-century photos? If they are very old, there might be an archives in a library or university that is interested in them if they depict places as well, for instance. Also, I think there are sites online (and maybe through Facebook) where people do try to help with photographs–finding families for photos and photos for families. Maybe someone would agree to be a caretaker for your photos–there are many people who rescue old photos from antique malls and flea markets and try to find family. I think the most direct and best way would be for you set up an online family tree through that one (I don’t use it and can’t remember what it’s called) site that is sort of a worldwide interactive family tree and attach photos to the names, if you are able. Then the photos will be picked up by others (digitally) who are close to these branches of the tree. Maybe other people have suggestions. Mainly, you find that in the general marketplace old photos have absolutely no value unless there is something “special” about them. That is so heart-breaking, when you think about it.
P.S. LOVE this photo of yours today, too!
Thanks, it was my grandmother’s favorite photo of her mother-in-law.
Thanks very much for the response about the old photos, Luanne…I have thought about setting up a website, but it seems like an overwhelming task. I will try to Google and maybe develop a plan. I have a “thing” about photos – I think I must be a hoarder of those. My secret is safe with you, I’m sure. 🙂
