How Did My Great Great Grandmother Stay Warm and Stylish?
February 7, 2013 by Luanne

This fine woolen shawl was owned by Alice Paak (Peek) DeKorn. The predominant color is a dark green. My great great grandmother passed away in 1908, so this family artifact is over 100 years ago. It is in perfectly pristine condition.

That is gorgeous! Ralph Lauren eat your heart out!
Hahah, so true!!!
It’s beautiful….but on my computer, my eyes read no green! I see black and aqua-green-green and various warmer tones.
What looks like black is actually dark green, which is obvious in person and even on my computer screen I can see it. But I wrote that it was green because I suspected that it might appear black on some screens. It’s like absolutely brand new.
I bet it seems warmer cos of the connection with your grandmother, too. Lovely
Ah, thank you so much. Yes, it seems really special to me! 🙂
Your great-great-grandmother’s shawl is just beautiful. Do you have it displayed in a room, or is it usually packed away? How fortunate you are to have this heirloom.
Barb, I have it packed away, but I need to find out the best way to preserve it and haven’t yet done my research. It only came to me recently.
I agree with the others that the shawl is beautiful. It’s amazing what good condition the shawl is in after all these years.
I wish I knew how my grandmother kept that shawl all this time without it aging. I have it in an archival box, but am not sure if I should do something else. Thanks, Sheryl!
It is heirlooms like this that bring the ancestors closer to the present day. To actually have the same shawl, to touch it and maybe wear it is such an intimate way to connect.
Yes, EmilyAnn, it feels so precious to me. For me I connect very much with textiles, in particular, and knowing that she owned this is so special.

Thank you for all the wonderful work you are doing. I am a distant relative and I am enjoying finding out more about the Flipse family. I am a great grandchild of Cora A Flipse and Hardy Brabbs.
Hi cousin! Thanks for stopping by, Alina. I’d love to flesh out that part of my family tree. If you like, please email me luanne[.]castle[@]gmail[.]!
