As I described last week in Six-Week Family History Series at BROAD STREET MAGAZINE, six poems and flash prose pieces from my chapbook Kin Types are being featured at Broad Street Magazine, along with some of the research and research artifacts I used to create the pieces. The idea was first suggested by editor Susann Cokal. Fabulous idea!
Today the second part of the series was published and can be found here: Family Laundry 2: “What Came Between A Woman and Her Duties” by Luanne Castle
This article is about a poem I wrote about my great-great-grandfather’s sister, Jennie DeKorn Culver. If you recall from past blog posts, she is the woman who left Kalamazoo for Seattle with her two adult daughters, years after a contentious divorce from John Culver.
An introduction to the series can be found here. SERIES INTRODUCTION
The first feature article is Family Laundry: “Family Laundry: “An Account of a Poor Oil Stove Bought off Dutch Pete,” by Luanne Castle”
Fascinating to read (again) about Jennie but more importantly about your whole thought process in researching her. And I’d forgotten about the discovered photos! Quite amazing.
That photo album is simply amazing. What a wonderful gift. I could never have imagined receiving such a beautiful heirloom that would lead to discoveries about Jennie and her daughters.
And to think it could have just stayed in the trash….just unbearable.
Then you have to think of all the albums that have met their ends that way!!!!! So awful.
I am sure many of my relatives since I have so few pictures of my closest ancestors…
I would imagine so. I can’t believe I am missing photos from my family, but there are branches where there is nothing or very little, so most likely some of mine also. And on my dad’s side before they came to this country–did they even have photos taken? I would guess not.
😦
Congratulations… Good Job.
Thank you so much, Jose!
I clicked on everything and loved reading all about her, reminding me of past posts read as well. Congratulations on this series ~ it is well deserved! Sharon
Ah, so nice to hear, Sharon! Thank you so very much!
Reblogged this on Luanne Castle's Writer Site and commented:
Week two up at Broad Street Magazine! So thrilled. How did I learn that my great-great-grandfather’s sister was an artist?
Again, congratulations, Luanne
Thank you, John!
Fascinating addition to your history – so being an artist was not an honest living?!
Haha, not for a woman, that’s for sure!!!
Congratulations again, for the feature in Broad Street Magazine! I am really enjoying learning about your fascinating family and also why and how you decided to write Kin Types.
Clare, thank you so much! Honestly, I think everybody’s family is fascinating once you start peeking and probing ;)!
