In a previous post called What Went On at Ramona Palace, the photograph that was marked Ramona that actually was the Summer Home Place sparked the question if the Ramona pavilion had windows on the lake side. By the sixties, when I saw it, the lake windows either didn’t exist or had been blocked off behind the bandstand.
The other day my father found a postcard of the Ramona pavilion–a view from the lake. Clearly, the structure was built with windows facing the lake.
On the left side of this photograph are the windows at the end of the building that face the lake. The bandstand was just inside those windows. And see the steps leading down to the lake? They would lead you right into the . . . bottomless drop-off! That was such a scary part of the lake by the sixties! I imagined all kinds of underwater beasts living in that mysterious section of the lake.
The property was originally owned by Henry and Carrie (Paak) Waruf. Carrie was my great-great-grandmother’s sister. What do you think is the material of his hat in this photo?
This is a photograph marked “Hank Waruf (cigar in mouth). He’s definitely much older in this photo than the one above.

Love the hat! No clue what it’s made from.
All those old “resorts” must have been such an escape for people back then. Today everyone wants spas, fancy exercise equipment, classes, yoga, etc. Whatever happened to just enjoying the country air? 🙂
Oh, I think it would have been such fun! Everything was a little formal then. People wore actual clothes at picnics (not bathing suits), etc. So there would have been a wonderful mix between the casual and nature and the formality of the era.
That hat seems to be made of whipped cream. I bet that Ramona Park was a blast back in the day — it probably still is.
Whipped cream?! Hahahaha. No. His hat? Look at it closely. It almost looks like an animal print. It also looks expensive.
It was a blast when I was a kid, I know that!
My first thought was a snow cone!! *lol* See? Jeannie & I think along the same track.
I’m trying to figure out what you two are seeing! I’m talking about HIS hat in the photo of Carrie and Henry Waruf. It looks like a pretty standard hat except snazzier with a “print” to it. What are you guys talking about!!
We were focused on the wrong thing. So sorry. You also have the added advantage of seeing it for real as a child. We’re looking at a small pic with an even smaller hat, and her white one jumps out, and his printed one fades into the background. All I can say is I guess maybe Jeannie & I were hungry when we read your post. :-0
Hah, I knew it was her hat! I think his hat is really cool, but wonder if it’s actually a fur hat or if it’s patterned some other way.
Was it actual animal fur, do you remember from childhood? Anyone visit Africa and kill big game?
I never knew the Warufs. In fact, that photograph is over 100 years old. I might feel that old some days, but i have a few decades to go ;).
